Petticoat and Polka Dots – Nylons are a Must-Have
Hello everyone,

In my last blog, I promised to report back on how the Oh Là Là Pur Nylon Couture black in size 2 fits once I received it. I have to say, it’s a snug fit, and I wouldn’t mind them being a size larger. While they no longer stop mid-thigh, for my taste, they still don’t reach high enough. However, they look great and feel really good. A small addendum comes to mind: in my first blog, I wrote that original nylons were made in two parts and therefore had a seam. That’s nonsense, of course; then they would have two seams. They were made from one piece and then sewn together. Later, circular knitting machines were used, which allowed for the production of seamless nylons. But I say, the seam actually makes the legs appear slimmer… I’m a fan of seamed nylons!
But for What Occasion Do You Actually Wear Nylons?
That reminds me of the two Baseballs concerts I attended. For those unfamiliar with The Baseballs, they are a cover band that plays songs in the 50s style. The atmosphere was fantastic, and each time I sang along loudly and danced the night away. At our first concert, we weren’t dressed appropriately: upon entering the venue, you saw hundreds of people dressed in 50s-style outfits. So, for the next concert, we immediately got ourselves beautiful rockabilly dresses. I could write an entire blog post about issues with sizing and ordering, etc., but perhaps another time. Now, in our dresses, we were no longer conspicuously out of place, but right in the thick of things. My dress had – and still has – small pink polka dots on a black background and little bows on the pocket and straps;

My friend’s dress is green and plain, but with elegant pleats, and of course, we both wore a petticoat underneath. By the way, dancing in a flared dress with a petticoat is even more fun; you feel truly feminine. What I then noticed was that it looks even better when you catch a glimpse here and there of a suspender holding authentic nylons. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any! Of course, we still had fun and a good reason to be there again at the next concert, but then fully equipped with a petticoat dress and nylons!
On the other hand, I can think of all sorts of occasions related to celebrations and dressing up, such as New Year’s Eve, birthdays, May Day celebrations, or Oktoberfest. I’m currently thinking of Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast… I wonder if she wears nylons underneath?

And just like that, I already have many questions that I will try to answer over the next few weeks. Firstly, why is a petticoat called a petticoat? Where does it come from, and what are the differences? What’s the ‘feel’ like when dancing in nylons for an evening? Where do polka dots come from? What exactly is the 50s clothing style? Do nylon stockings traditionally belong under a Dirndl? And so on…
I’m looking forward to the research; if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
Until then
Your Julia
