Do’s and Don’ts for Wearing and Caring for Real Stockings
The Do’s and Don’ts for Wearing and Caring for Real Stockings – Unveiling the Secrets of Nylon Stockings, whether hold-ups or with a suspender belt.
Real stockings add timeless elegance to any outfit, providing both comfort and style. However, wearing and caring for them properly can be tricky. If you want to get the most out of your stockings, it’s essential to follow a few key guidelines. Here’s a helpful guide on what you should do – and what you should avoid – when it comes to these delicate garments.
The Do’s
Do – Choose the Right Size
-
- Stockings that fit well are more comfortable, look better, and last longer. Always check the size chart, which is displayed on each of our stocking product pages, before purchasing. A good fit prevents sagging and bunching, and reduces the risk of runs.
Do – Wear a Suspender Belt
-
- If you’re wearing classic stockings (not modern tights), use a suspender belt. It holds the stockings in place and prevents slipping. Make sure the suspender clips are securely and correctly positioned to prevent twisting or sagging. We are often asked how many straps are optimal when choosing a suspender belt. We, like many of our customers, believe that at least 6 straps ensure your stockings are held well and your seam stays straight.
Do – Where Should the Top of the Stocking Sit on the Thigh?
-
- This is a highly debated topic. In the fifties, women generally wore skirts below the knee. Generally, stockings sat mid-thigh. If you talk to a thoroughly modern woman about it, she generally wants the top of the stocking to sit around the upper thigh. Accordingly, there’s no general rule of thumb, other than personal preference. Our size charts are designed for stockings to sit at mid-thigh, which is approximately three-quarters of the way up the thigh.
Do – Enjoy Premium Quality
-
- When you slip into Vicky’s Nylons, you’ll enjoy the luxurious feel of English and French craftsmanship. Our stockings are made from high-quality materials, representing elegance, durability, and a stunning appearance.
Do – Handle with Care
-
- Not only do real nylon stockings require care when putting them on, but all stockings and tights should be handled with cotton gloves, as even the slightest roughness of the skin can damage your beautiful hosiery. When putting on stockings, roll them down to the toes, then gently roll them up your leg. This prevents overstretching or runs. Be especially careful if you have sharp nails or are wearing rings. Again: Please use protective gloves when putting on your hosiery. If you don’t have cotton gloves, you can purchase them in our webshop – they are quite inexpensive. The savings you gain by preventing the destruction of a stocking through the use of protective gloves is money well spent.
Do – Use Lotion Wisely
-
- Do you want to moisturize your legs before putting on stockings? Go ahead, but be careful with the amount and let the lotion absorb completely. Too much lotion can cause the stockings to slip – and that’s not the fabulous look you’re aiming for.
Do – Hand Wash Your Stockings
-
- Always hand wash your stockings with a mild detergent. Delicate fabrics can easily be damaged in a washing machine, even on a gentle cycle. Gently swirl the stockings in cold water and do not wring them out. Instead, press them between a towel to remove excess water.
Do – Lay Stockings Flat to Dry
-
- Lay your stockings flat on a towel to dry. Hanging them can cause them to stretch out of shape, while tumble drying will damage them. Air drying is the gentlest option and helps maintain their shape and elasticity.
Do – Store Properly
-
- Store your stockings rolled or folded in a drawer. You can also use a fabric bag or a stocking pouch (we have stocking storage bags available under Accessories) to prevent them from snagging on other garments. Avoid storing stockings with rough fabrics, as these can cause damage.
Do – Don’t Be Afraid of the Suspender Belt
-
- As you venture into the world of suspenders and stockings, rest assured they are easier to manage than you might initially think. Suspender belts not only add a touch of elegance but also ensure your stockings stay securely in place.
The Don’ts: Avoiding Stocking Mishaps
Don’t – Beware of Long Nails and Jewelry
-
- Be careful with long nails and jewelry. They are the potential enemies of your stockings. Long nails and delicate fabric are like magnets for runs. Trim your nails and be cautious when handling jewelry to avoid unexpected tears.
Don’t – Don’t Pull Too Hard
-
- If you pull too hard on your stockings when putting them on, they can tear or slip. Always take your time and roll them up your legs with a gentle motion.
Don’t – Don’t Wear with Rough Shoes
-
- Be mindful of the shoes you wear with stockings. Rough interiors, sharp zippers, or unfinished seams can quickly lead to tears. Opt for shoes with smooth linings or insoles to protect the fabric.
Don’t – Don’t Forget to Moisturize Your Skin
-
- Dry skin, especially on the legs, can snag on stockings and cause small tears. Moisturize your skin before wearing stockings, but allow the cream to fully absorb before putting them on to prevent slipping.
Don’t – Don’t Ignore Small Tears
-
- Small tears can quickly turn into large runs. At the first sign of a tear, apply clear nail polish or a dab of fabric glue to the ends to prevent it from spreading. This can extend the life of your stockings until you can replace them.
Don’t – Don’t Wash in Hot Water
-
- Hot water weakens the fibers, causing your stockings to lose elasticity and durability. Always use cold or lukewarm water for washing.
Don’t – Don’t Sit on Rough Surfaces
-
- Avoid sitting on rough fabrics or surfaces like wood or concrete, as these can cause friction and damage the delicate material. If possible, place a soft scarf or piece of fabric on the surface before sitting down.
