How to Keep your New Lingerie Looking Good for Longer
Did you get some beautiful new lingerie for Christmas and have no idea how to wash it properly?
Not to mention the wide range of detergents available. We’re going to try and give you some advice here, primarily to help those who are unsure or simply have no experience in washing lingerie.
This post is also intended to encourage you to share your washing knowledge and experiences with washing lingerie; you can use the comment function on Vickys Nylons’ blog for this.
Lingerie is usually made of delicate, sensitive fabrics. These fabrics can’t withstand spinning, heat or fabric softeners. Most washing recommendations say “hand wash only” and for good reason. The fibers of the fabrics warp at temperatures above 30 degrees (some even at 20) or are damaged by incorrect detergents. Wringing or spinning is also a no-go for fine lingerie, as is drying in the sun. But how can I get my laundry clean and hygienically clean? What do I need to consider for nylon stockings?
Washing lingerie properly isn’t that difficult and doesn’t necessarily have to be done by hand. First of all, you should of course sort your lingerie properly by colors and only wash similar colors together, whether by hand or in the machine. Use a good detergent for delicate laundry and stick to the manufacturer’s instructions for quantities.
Washing in the Washing Machine
It’s best to test your washing machine with an older item of lingerie that you won’t be too upset about if it goes wrong. Not all washing machines deliver what they promise. However, many machines have decent settings for hand washing or wool and delicates, which you can also use for your lingerie. You should not wash your lingerie with other heavy items of clothing. Laundry bags are great little helpers and protect your laundry. Always close all fasteners and take your laundry out of the machine promptly; lingerie doesn’t like being left waiting after washing!
Washing by Hand
When washing by hand, it is particularly important not to underestimate the temperature; 30 degrees doesn’t feel particularly warm on your hands. If in doubt, it’s better to wash everything completely cold. Only let the lingerie soak for a little while, never longer than a few minutes. Rubbing is taboo; gently immerse the laundry several times and then wash it out with clear water.
Drying
Tumble dryers and irons are of course not an option. Drying should be as gentle as washing. Find a clean, not too warm place; under no circumstances should you dry lingerie in direct sunlight. It is better to lay bras on a flat surface than to hang them on the line. Only gently pull the laundry into shape if necessary.
Washing Nylons
Vickys Nylons sells high-quality stockings made of pure nylon, which are manufactured exclusively on special machines. These great products should also be treated with special care when washing. When machine washing, it is advisable to place the nylons neatly together in a washing bag, so they don’t bunch up! Never wash nylons together with bras or other underwear that could destroy your nylons with hooks or the like.
