February 14th, a Day like any other for some, a Special Occasion for Others.

As with many things in life, there’s no right or wrong answer here. February 14th is known as the day of lovers, whether that’s historically rooted or simply a marketing ploy by florists and the chocolate industry to boost sales.

In my opinion, anyone who has decided to spend the day with their partner or give a gift to their loved one is not doing anything wrong. Everyone is happy to receive gifts, especially in these difficult times. That’s why I’ve put together a few customs from around the world. It doesn’t always have to be a romantic dinner for two at your favorite Italian restaurant or a short trip to Paris.

Everyone benefits from Valentine’s Day in Japan; there, all male acquaintances, relatives, and even colleagues are given dark chocolate on February 14th, and then it’s the ladies’ turn on March 14th.

In Italy, love locks are traditionally hung on bridges and the key is sunk in the river. Marked with a name and date, the love should last as long as the lock hangs there.

In England, since the 15th century, a partner has been chosen by lot to exchange poems and gifts. Today, people there send their chosen one a beautifully decorated card with a poem and a small gift, often without a return address, which has to be guessed. Let’s stay in the UK – the Welsh have been giving each other love spoons for over 400 years, whether carved, bought or inherited – I have no idea – in any case unusual and interesting. However, the Day of Love is already celebrated there on January 25.

In Spain, the “Dia de St. Jordi” is celebrated on April 25th and people receive books as gifts, which I personally think is great. It’s sustainable and also spiritually valuable. But husbands also give red roses there.

The Americans are of course second to none. Gifts are given for all they’re worth. It’s not just lovers who give each other presents here, everyone who is important to you gets a gift – from homemade to extremely expensive, everything is included. The cat a new collar, the mother a cake heart, the wife expensive earrings and the goldfish a new partner and so on.
