February 14th, a Day like any other for some, a Special Occasion for Others.

As with many things in life, there’s no right or wrong answer here. February 14th is known as the day of lovers, whether that’s historically rooted or simply a marketing ploy by florists and the chocolate industry to boost sales.

In my opinion, anyone who decides to celebrate the day with their partner or give a gift to their loved ones is not doing anything wrong. Everyone appreciates gifts, especially under the current difficult circumstances. That’s why I’ve put together a few customs from around the world for you. It doesn’t always have to be – and currently can’t always be – a romantic dinner for two at your favorite Italian restaurant or a short trip to Paris.

Everyone benefits from Valentine’s Day in Japan; there, all male acquaintances, relatives, and even colleagues are given dark chocolate on February 14th, and then it’s the ladies’ turn on March 14th.

In Italy, love locks are traditionally hung on bridges and the key is thrown into the river. Bearing names and dates, the love is said to last as long as the lock hangs there.

In England, since the 15th century, a partner was chosen by lot for the exchange of poems and gifts. Today, people there send their chosen one a beautifully decorated card with a poem and a small gift, often without a sender, who is to be guessed. Staying in the UK – The Welsh have been giving each other love spoons for over 400 years, whether self-carved, bought or inherited – I have no idea – but certainly unusual and interesting. However, the day of love is celebrated there as early as January 25th.

In Spain, the ‘Dia de St. Jordi’ is celebrated only on April 25th, and books are given as gifts, which I personally find wonderful. That is sustainable and also intellectually valuable. However, husbands also give red roses there.

Of course, the Americans are unsurpassed. Here, gifts are given with abandon. Not only lovers exchange gifts here; everyone who is important to you receives a token of appreciation, from homemade to extremely expensive, everything is included. The cat gets a new collar, the mother a cake heart, the wife expensive earrings, and the goldfish a new partner, etc.

Not least because this blog is about nylons, but also because it really is a great gift idea, I would like to suggest that you buy suspenders, lingerie and nylons to give yourself a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift that will also make your partner happy. It is durable, versatile and may bring back fond memories of this day in the future. There are no limits to the possible variations of nylons with the classics of Valentine’s Day customs. If you want to go all out, cook a romantic dinner, decorate the apartment with red roses and recite a love poem before dessert – all in “suspenders & nylons” dress code, of course. A little tip… turn up the heating a little beforehand!
